Nigerians and our Expectations

I think, as Nigerians, our expectations are way too high. A friend of mine used to say "wetin you no go accept as rich man, reject am as poor man". The saying simply means keep your standard constantly high, don't bow to the laws of marginal cost, because if you give way on something you have to compromise on another that may matter more. We cannot lower our standards as people on some issues and be outraged when we get other things of lower standards. It's a mix of very funny and very sad, the kind of simple things that have been used to displace the Nigerian common sense, then we rant and rave trying to prove how high our expectations are. When you are okay with driving on bad roads and not asking questions, you want to take offense that customer care is not responding to you? When you are okay with no electricity in your house for one week and yet you want the solar energy company to give you bargain prices? You are okay with constant interruptio...

SLAYQUEEN

Photo Credit Queen E. Collections NY   Visit Site here I once read a post about a female bricklayer, who earns a living by working in construction sites. This post was up on Facebook and had a few hundred likes and comments. Everyone who reads stuff on Facebook and blogs know that the real stuff happens in the comments. I proceeded to read the comments under the post because my procrastination monkey had taken over and that guy (yes my procrastination monkey is male and that's because all the most accomplished procrastinators I know are men) loves social media a lot. I Digress, most of the comments rightly praised her because why not, that is totally a male dominated profession (way to breaking glass ceilings)... there was a particular one though that stood out for me, Written by a man  it went about stating h...

Who Reputation Help

"A good name is better than riches" it is said, but who reputation help? In a county where we give awards to men and women we know lack integrity just because they are rich. Where the rules that apply to the 1 % don't apply to others...so who reputation help please? The problem is that the saying is mostly true. A good name is better than riches. There are real life instances that support this and we know them. In life, nothing holds more influence for people than the word of somebody they trust. Real life is hardly influenced by Facebook posts or social media coverage. People only refer people who they like and who are good at what they do whether they met them on social media or not. I met a staff member at a clients organisation and the first thing I noticed right off was the bad attitude. Whenever I went back to that office, I did my best to st...

Is It Not Yet Time?

"Is it not yet time?" the Aunty asks Ify as they stood there looking at the newly minted husband and wife as they walked down the aisle... She laughed and walked away. Fast forward to a few years later, "Is it not yet time?" her uncle asks as she looks at her new husband in confusion. He reiterates, more forceful this time "is it not yet time for you and Oga to concentrate and give us grandchildren? I hope the pregnancy has entered oh?” She proceeds to politely walk away, dragging her husband by the hands to refrain from saying anything rude about silly questions and assholes. Fast forward a few years later one baby successfully birthed going on 4 years. "Is it not yet time for number 2?" her husband’s annoying co-worker who fancies himself a close family friend says with so much superiority as they both sit and watch their kids play. The questions keep ...

The Nigerian Factor

You are sitting in your house minding your business, the Electricity providers, truck passes by, you are not worried, they back up and stop at your house gate and try to bully your poor gate man to open the gate. You have however given him specific instruction not to let THOSE PEOPLE in again. It’s war. So they call you, you go to meet them and the AEDC people try to intimidate you into opening the gate, for them to check what you don't know as there is no prepaid meter.  They promise to come back another day for more action if you don't show them your bill. Bill you have paid oh, so you relent and show them.                                   The next month they bring a new bill and somehow, with the same amount of light they give you, you have managed to use triple the amount of power you used the previous month.  That first wave of hopelessness is felt before the anger sets i...

Remember That You Will Die

Memento Mori; Remember that you will die, or as the  millennials put it YOLO (you only live once).                                 This saying was to remind humans of the vain nature of  life and earthly things, but going beyond this it's also a reminder that our time here is brief and we get this chance once, so what are we doing to live our  lives as best as we can today. We are constantly bugged down with things and things we want to do that make us forget the important stuff, sometime we are bugged down by fear that stops us from taking chances on our selves or those around us. Don't buy a house now till you are married, or start that business you have wanted to start, or take the chance on that guy or girl, give to the needy, help a friend out, whatever it is you want to do to make your life fuller and  happier. All of us have the feeling that we ar...

In The Details

I always laugh when I have to read all those articles about how to make your relationship last. I have always felt It really isn't up to one thing you do or are doing to get someone to stay with you. Individuals decide this is what they want, and they fight to keep it  no amount of squats, yam pounding, stomach tying and kegles(these may help though, who knows) you do. Unless you have been married for 60 years blissfully and passionately you can't really say right? because even 30 year marriages can end. The part of last year that really killed my happily ever after buzz was the Angelina and Brad split. I was really rooting for them as I have a constant woman crush  on Angelina. While I understand that some view her as a husband snatcher/home wrecker, I don't think she went after his previous marriage wit...
