Woman March 3: Pretty

,Little girl, happy voice, hope is the word, see something pretty
Daddy's Girl, going to be great, happy heart, so you think I am pretty
,Painful cramps, broken heart, busy mind, don't know that I am pretty
,Big nose, brown skin, brown eyes, nice girl, do you think I am pretty
Flat tummy, long legs, thick glasses, slow speech, do you think I am pretty,
No food, bitter tea, first class, Glass smile, so I can be pretty,
Big bed, late night, hot breath, hate myself, but do you think I am pretty,
Smart mind, quick speech, read all, don't matter, do you think I am pretty,
Great heart, nice smile, your girl, do you think I am pretty,
Hate me, love me, leave me, but do you think I am pretty,
.Found my myself, happy again, hopeful again, so I know I am pretty

"Whatever role we had to play, whether it was the tom boy, the wall flower or the blooming beauty, We took it on like  champs"

I think it came from the fact that no one really paid attention (except my mother since she had only 2 girls anyway) being a middle child an all that. Pretty was not a word I had to deal with until I made it into mixed school at age 13.

Let me just tell you that this is a very complicated age to throw a girl into the midst of young girls who happen to be discovering themselves in the midst of boys. The girls were not so friendly, neither were the boys to think about it, but I was comfortable until I had to assume the role of pretty girl to get attention from boys (stop judging we all did this).

Thinking back now, all the constant comparing of yourself to other people and the worrying that you will never grow into the beauty you hope to be are not things that should be mixing with hormones.

But we grew up and we became women with women issues, from worries on how to get the boy you like to speak to you, to worries on how to get the man you like to speak to you and worries on how to kick ass at the office or in your chosen business or profession.

From how to find a way to sneak out to the party to how to find a way to sneak out of the party so people will take you seriously.

From how to steal your mum's nail polish and paint the nails with no one noticing, to swallowing vitamins to get the nails to what they used to be.

From how to be slim and pretty to how to... oh wait still be slim and pretty.

From how to get other people to like you to how to get yourself to like you.

Our problems change shape and grow with us but if there is one thing that no one can give you that you realise as you go from girl to woman it's that pretty has always been inside you and only you can bring it out.

Cheers to all the Pretty Girls: May you grow to be Pretty Women who bring life to all around you.

xoxo

The Waiting Room

Photo by Kyle Glenn on Unsplash Been sitting in this position of stagnation Watching doors open and close in trepidation My emotions jumble in confusion When will it be my turn? People pass me in this chair the walls are rock surrounded by air doors opening and closing, despair When can I get going? The time ticks by as I watch Slowly draining as a trough While I fight to clutch Are all my dreams now dead? The sound of hope as doors burst open Window agape as glass lay broken A way to pass I see as I awaken After discovery in this waiting room. -YD- How I hate to wait. I strongly dislike standing still and just waiting for time to pass, for something to happen. I tell myself that God has got to find me here, if I stand still long enough God has got to hear me, but I still stand there waiting for something to happen and most times nothing does. When I was much younger when things don't turn out as I planned for them to; I d...

Vals through the ages

Before SS1, Valentine's day was a day when my Father made us all dress to the nines and he took us to the "swankyest" restaurant in whatever town we were in usually Abuja or Calabar. Fast forward to senior secondary I changed schools from an all girls boarding to a mixed boarding. I became aware of what the holiday meant (the whole lovers situation). In an all girls school, Vals day was just a low key day for "school daughters and mothers". In the mixed school though it was a whole other monster. The night before, girls stayed awake talking about all the boys that liked them and who they will be expecting gifts from. Come morning, girls will go to class holding their breath hoping that the boy they have a crush on has finally grown a pair and put something nice in their locker. This day also was also the unfortunate day that boys picked to play practic...

Let's talk about SEX

I have been on twitter since I woke up. I am currently on holiday so I have the time :) there is a conversation about rape and rape culture is Nigeria but I will go unto that later. Now though I want to talk about one of the 7 wonders of the World: Sex. Good for you if you think it is and wait and see if you think it isn't LOL. Sex has always had a different sort of connotation in our country always so shrouded in mystery. People don't talk about it, if you talk about it you are bad. First of all let's note that I do not write any blog post that I will not be proud of my daughter reading one day. so I am going to write this post as I will want my child to understand it. What we need in this world now is not more articles telling us how to have sex, LOL these are useful but somehow, we kind of find that out on our own. What we need are real articles telling us about the ramifications and emotional entanglements of the entire glorious affair, and more reason why...
