Vals through the ages

Before SS1, Valentine's day was a day when my Father made us all dress to the nines and he took us to the "swankyest" restaurant in whatever town we were in usually Abuja or Calabar. Fast forward to senior secondary I changed schools from an all girls boarding to a mixed boarding. I became aware of what the holiday meant (the whole lovers situation). In an all girls school, Vals day was just a low key day for "school daughters and mothers". In the mixed school though it was a whole other monster. The night before, girls stayed awake talking about all the boys that liked them and who they will be expecting gifts from. Come morning, girls will go to class holding their breath hoping that the boy they have a crush on has finally grown a pair and put something nice in their locker. This day also was also the unfortunate day that boys picked to play practic...

Soft and Pink.

I know a girl, she knows how to stop a crowd, though she is not the most beautiful, there is something about her that catches the eye. She holds her head high, laughs from her heart and wears a smile like gold. I know a girl with a heart so true a love so pure and a mind so strong. She wears her love like a dress and her thoughts she's not afraid to share. That's the girl I want to be, Soft and strong and pink. -YD                                                Soft and Pink is an expression I stole from Wendy Williams. I love it, because it refers to some things a woman sometimes is. I have been wanting to write on this and what it means to me for quite some time and my thoughts have been all over the place. So soft and pink, if your mind is not in the gutter when you hear these words, you  think of fluffy a...

Parenting 101: Tough Love

John has always had to work for what he gets. Even when he was 10 years old his father made him take jobs to augment his pocket money or buy a toy he wanted. Nothing was handed to him unless he has done absolutely well in school.  His parents were regular middle class and he grew up in a regular middle class neighbourhood  not missing anything. When he graduated from university, his father sent him off for his Msc. he came back and couldn't find a job. His father tolerated him for 2 years after that after which he gave John an ultimatum.  His father gave him 100k and sent him on his jolly way.  3 months later he got a job in another town through people he knew. Ade was an only son. His father loved him very much. He never really had to work for anything his parents kind of handled all that w...

In 2016

Happy New Year everyone. I am so excited that we made it here and we are safe. That's good. This is my New year resolution post. I usually don't do new year resolutions because as far as I am concerned they are just designed to fail. I think the flaw is in the grandness of my plans eg. build the first Airplane in Nigeria, how can I do this when 1) I know nothing about engineering 2) I couldn't be bothered to learn. So that's always basically my problems with these resolutions but I am making an exception this year. Two reasons, first is I am staring down the barrel at 30 in a few years and I honestly don't want to enter into it in my current state of mind and the second reason is; I am just excited about this year. I don't necessarily get excited about new years but like a child, children don't really get the potential of a new note book. Only someone who appreciates it when it's full and  the wisdom stored in it. I am wiser now and I ...

Nigeria: What Change Really Looks Like

Hello People, It has been a while but thanks for sticking with me, Everyone is rounding out for the year so the work has not been easy but we are grateful to God because it has not been easy but it has been fabulous. I was going to write an ode to MEN. Yes you read it right An Ode to Men, Saying all the wonderful reasons why we should still celebrate them. Patriarchy had a bad year though! LOL. In this post i am going to teach you how to be a Nigerian. You think you are a Nigerian but you have no idea.  I will be exploring 5 basic features every Nigerian should Posses based on the examples we have been given. Never take responsibility for your actions: you may be someone who is quick to stand up and take the blame, but you are doing it all wrong.  A true Nigerian never takes responsibility. Don't you read the news, or Linda Ikeji like every normal Nigerian person, don't you read how the current ruling class keeps blaming the past administration for  ev...

The photocopy project

This is an issue I have to discuss. Before I get to it  I have decided that I am going full on Nigerian from now till June next year, thus I will buy Nigerian, eat Nigerian and even... wait for it.... listen to Nigerian music even watch sound city!!!!! imagine that. I haven't even done 1 week and I am tired. Not because Nigerian music does not inspire but some of them are such replicas of the others you won't believe. That aside I am here to discuss the photocopy project: you know all those women that take on all the interests of the men they are with? and how they are celebrated without end. Your man likes jazz so you like Jazz, he likes soccer so you wear the jersey and endure 90mins from hell in   a state of extreme boredom for him. Your man likes games so thus you are now a hotshot gamer. Then you break up with him move on to the next man, suddenly you like old school reggae and hardcore rap, no more Chelsea now Arsenal. I have been guilty of this crime,...
